Types of motorcycles

Street or standard bikes (also called naked bikes)

These are simple motorcycles good for city commutes popular in India. The height of handle bar, seat height, and position of leg rest are designed to give a comfy riding posture. These bikes suit your budget and come with lightweight, high fuel efficiency, and good maneuvering features for city traffic. Standard motorcycles under 150 cc can be placed in this category.

Cruisers

Cruiser motorcycles have a high handle and forward footrests to give you a riding position of erect spine or a slight lean back ride position. These bikes are comfortable for riding at moderate speeds on short trips but may lead to fatigue on long journeys.

These bikes are easy to maneuver, come with good performance, and are good for cruising on relaxed scenic road rides either solo or with a companion.

Sport bikes

The typical features of a sports bike are high speed, faster acceleration, road grip, brakes, and handling. But they are low on comfort and fuel efficiency. Sport bikes are designed to allow high angles when cornering and have an aerodynamic design. They come with a high seat height and high ground clearance. The construction of the seat, handle, and footrest pegs gives the rider a forward-leaning ride position.

Touring motorcycle

Touring motorcycles are typically built for comfortable and extended-period riding. Touring motorcycles have higher displacement engines, large fuel tanks, comfortable rider seats and pillion backrests, windshields, side storage bags, and smartphone connectivity and are heavier than other motorcycles. The seat height is suitable for most riders. Touring motorcycles can be added with audio recreational facilities.

Sport touring bike

There are motorcycles categorized as ‘sport touring.’  The sport-touring motorcycles lack many comforts of a normal touring motorcycle, but they are compensated by adding sports styling. Sport touring bikes give more comfortable rides than a sport bike, both for the rider and the passenger. Sport touring bikes are lighter, and have a race engine, suspension, and brakes that perform better when cornering. They are good for riding on curvy roads.

Off-road motorcycles (also called dirt bikes)

Off-road bikes are meant for riding on unpaved roads like mud, gravel, rocky, and rivers. The typical features of an off-road bike are lighter and flexible, high torque engine, high ground clearance, high seat height, and larger diameter wheels fitted with knobby tires. Many of the off-road bikes may not be eligible for riding on normal paved roads.

Dual-sport or dual-purpose bikes

Dual-sport motorcycles are capable of riding on the road and off the road with ease. Due to their high road clearance design, the seat height is higher. These are also called adventure bikes and can be legally ridden on paved roads and off-roads.
